21/03/2010 -    Romantic Strings
 

Violinist, Marina Marsden and violist, Justine Marsden will join forces with Melbourne pianist Robert Chamberlain to open Wyvern Music Forestville's 2010 concert series on Sunday 21st March at 4pm at Forestville Uniting Church.

Schumann's Fairy Tales, two of Bruch's Eight Pieces, a version of Kern's Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and the famous 'Horn Trio' by Brahms as the climax of the program, will all feature the warm and vibrant combination of violin, viola and piano. Suite Populaire by de Falla and Britten's Lachrymae (based on a song of John Dowland) will highlight the violin and viola respectively in duo combination with piano.

18/04/2010 -    Baroque Workshop with Louise King
 

Louise King is a modern and baroque cellist based on the Sunshine Coast. She is a
graduate of the Royal Northern College and Royal College of Music, England. Louise has
worked with many international orchestras and recorded for various labels on both
modern and baroque cello, and performs as soloist and chamber musician at major
festivals. Louise has a passion for teaching and gives workshops on a regular basis.

Sunday 18th April, 10.00 AM - 2.00 PM

Designed to benefit the private or school-based teacher and enquiring string player, this workshop will inspire participants to take a fresh look at the baroque jewels of the string repertoire. The workshop will take place in the context of a mixed string ensemble in a fun, informal play-along session. Replica baroque bows will be made available to use for participants, and harpsichord accompaniment will be provided by Katherine Stirling. The aim will be to further awareness of stylistic elements and techniques unique to the baroque period using the music of Purcell, Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli. Specifics covered will include baroque bow techniques, bowing patterns, dance bowing rules, fingering strategies, embellishments and cadenzas.

Full-time students free (still need to register).

This course in conducting will be held on Tuesday evenings over six consecutive weeks in Term 1, 2010. The course will provide an opportunity for sequenced skill development in conducting technique, covering areas such as beat patterns, subdivision, tempo changes, fermatas, mixed metres, left hand gestures, independence of hands, recitative and score preparation. In the latter part of the course, participants will form a small string orchestra with which to practice their conducting.

Duration: 6 weeks (Tuesday evenings)
Time: 7.00 - 9.00 PM

29/03/2010 -    An evening with Michael Goldschlager: HOW TO PRACTISE, A guide for teachers and parents
 

Cellist, Michael Goldschlager is perhaps best known to WA audiences through his many recordings with the renowned Macquarie Trio. A soloist and former principal cellist of the WASO and frequent guest principal cellist with the ACO, TSO and SSO, he has lived in Perth since 1985. He has held positions at UWA, WAAPA, where he taught units in pedagogy, the VCA and at ANAM, where he was Coordinator of Strings. He is currently half way through the process of recording all six of Bach's unaccompanied cello suites for ABC Classics/Universal, a two disc set which is expected to be released by the end of 2010.

Topics to be covered include:
What is practice?, How we learn, Common practice flaws, Why kids don't practise, Tools of the trade, Learning new pieces, Making a piece reliable, Memorising, Speed play, Dealing with the "hard parts", Preparing for performance, Project management, Practice journals, The many roles of the parent, Resources
